The Swiss typographer Adrian Frutiger has seen to leave his
mark on the design world leaving us with more then 30 original typefaces most
notoriety ‘Univers and Frutiger. Born in 1928, Frutiger started his career as
an apprentice printer at the age of 16 then deciding to study at the school of
applied arts in Zurich where he learnt to experiment with typography.
In the early 1970’s Frutieger was
approached by the Paris Transport authority to create a typeface for signage of
the city’s roads. He created a Univers
font variation – a set of
san-serif capitals and numbers specifically for white-on-dark-blue
backgrounds in poor light. Later on in 1976 he produced Frutiger another
san-serif font that can be used for either headings or body copy.
Austirian designer Stefan Sagmeister is known as one of the
greats in contemporary typography design. Studying graphic design at the University
of Applied Arts Vienna, where he soon rose to prominence in the world of
design. His contemporary use of typography has evolved from poster design where
he experimented with the use of type in non-traditional utilising three
dimensions for example his album artwork for Lou Reid.
Compared to Frutiger, Sagmeister doesn’t create conventional
typefaces with set weights and dimensions, but breaks the standards utilising
his surroundings to create unique designs, which are a key element in his
graphic works. Both designers are seen to be influential in the terms of different
fields. Frutiger has seen to influence in the design of directional and way
finding where Sagmeister has been a key player in the role of contemporary typography
where you are not limited to the screen or the page.
