Discussion Point 1 - Rachel Brex

The use of visual hierarchy and grids has evolved with the emergence of new digital technologies. Due to the constraints of the letterpress, digital applications have allowed visual hierarchy and grids to become more versatile, visually appealing and leave more room for creativity.

In my examples I am looking at these elements in relation to movie posters, pre-digital and digital.

In the more newer movie posters (ie. The Manchurian Candidate) the elements of visual hierarchy are more obvious. The title is a large bold font, the the font of the actors names being smaller. In the older version for this movie's poster, the tagline, actors names and title of the movie are almost the same sized font making it difficult to determine what text should be read first, and which of these are more important.
The older poster for The Parent Trap is also confusing in regards to its grid and visual hierarchy. there seems to be no order or reason for the way the text is displayed, it looks very messy and hard to realise which order each element should be read. The newer version of this poster has a distinct grid, your eyes are forced to read top to bottom and the visual hierarchy is clear.
